Lower Malden - a village typical of contemporary rural England - is Chris Wood's traditional setting for his wickedly funny, debut comic novel, CARRY ON QUACK.
Country doctor Edward Thomas, has flaws that beat even Mr Bean's well-documented eccentricities and the wild improbability of hotelier, Basil Fawlty. Chauvinistic, egotistic, Edward, is married to long-suffering Elizabeth, who has so far tolerated her husband's complicated OCD issues dominating their family life. But Elizabeth reaches breaking point when she discovers her husband dressed in her underwear - and her Manolo Blahniks - if only he get them on!
Edward is characteristically unrepentant and Elizabeth moves back to Mother, leaving her husband to supervise their two odd-ball and opportunistic teenage children, Neville and Jessica. In Elizabeth's absence, 14-year-old Neville soon indulges his puerile fantasies and nineteen-year-old Jessica drops college to become a model.
As the three abandoned Quacks struggle to come to terms with separation and looming divorce, charismatic, handsome hypnotist Guy Westlake steps in to seduce Elizabeth. Edward hits the bottle and whilst under the influence, is framed by his vengeful secretary, Mrs Willoughby, who lands her boss with a voluptuous, man-eating blonde.
Having been deprived of meat for umpteen years by veggie Elizabeth, Edward puts up only a token struggle. Meanwhile, into this cocktail of romps and regrets, strides the long arm of the law, smoothly outwitted by a vicious goat and left to the mercy of canine predator, Lucifer.
Other topics thrown into this heady concoction are alternative therapies, the occult, and Freudian slips that have nothing whatsoever to do with underwear. Or perhaps they have everything to do with underwear...a conundrum resolved by the ubiquitous Adolphus Hunt, private-eye-extraordinaire, whose efforts at extortion and knack for grasping the wrong end of the stick, makes him the perfect foil to the plot of Chris Wilt's surprisingly insightful and endearingly humorous, comedy of errors.

Yes there is a doctor named Quack somewhere. In this case it is Edward Quack, and quite the character he is. As of late Dr. Quack's life is falling to pieces. His wife is involved with - banish the thought- "alternative" medicines, the polar opposite of Dr. Quack's type of medicine, which consists of listening to people complain and writing them a prescription for one or more drugs. In addition to his wife, there is is his taciturn, adolescent son, Neville, who is developing an unhealthy regard for his sister's breasts; his daughter Jessica, who at the age of 18 is ready to chuck University for a career as a nude model. Then there are some assorted characters who ALWAYS seem to show up at just the wrong time: a policeman intent on arresting Quack; a loathsome dwarfish private investigator named Dolly; a ravishing blonde secretary who sees Dr. Quack as a reclamation project; a peeping-tom neighbor who provides a good deal of laughs with his constant spying on Quack and his family; a beast of a dog aptly named Lucifer; and an old, ferocious goat named Gollum. But they are all satellites orbiting Dr. Quack's sun. While everyone around him whirls like a dervish, rushing willy nilly here and there, it is Dr. Quack who soldiers on, driving everyone else CRAZY with anxiety, frustration, anger, envy and desire. Even when his wife has left him, and he is drinking too much, and his practice is falling apart; even when he is being pursued by an obsessed constable with an aching mouth or a tall, blond vixen named Angela Dodd.....Quack just carries on. Although I don't often draw parallels with my favorite book of all time, this one is slightly reminiscent of A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES. It has a some of that novel's comic energy going for it. Quack is the Ignatius Reilly of the British healthcare system. I hope the author will continue this series, because Quack is carried along by forces no one ever sees, he will undoubtedly survive the wreckage around him. I simply CANNOT WAIT for another Quack book! Absolutely, highly recommended! BEST SCENE: neighbor Jack answers the door to the Christmas carolers, mostly children.......Product details

Carry On Quack The Hilarious Adventures Of Dr Quack edition by Christopher Wood Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Well done Chris.
A Quacking read.
Look forward to your next book.
Is this book based on your own life experiences, if so what an interesting life you must have had!!!
Best wishes to you.....
This book had me laughing from start to finish.
Poor Edward! His married life is his turmoil and his wife is being chased by a randy hypnotherapist.
Even the dog Lucy/Lucifer plays an integral part in this hilarious story.
The writing was superb and the well-drawn characters were easy to visualise.
Great read, can't wait to read more. ;-)
I read about 18% of the book and then realized that I still didn't like any of the characters. They all were mean, petty, selfish or plain stupid. The situations were dumb [man wearing ladies tights in the yard] dumb cops. I couldn't get interested.
I'm glad others liked it, but sadly I didn't.
From Dr. Quack to Lucifer, the demon dog, this is such a great romp! The product detail says enough about the story line, so I won't go there except to add that it's set during the Christmas season, which gives the story additional color. Wilt adds his own special brand of wit, plenty of plot twists, and enough different points of view to keep the pages turning fast and the laughs coming one after the other. I loved it and can't wait for the next one.
